Refresh Your Look with Injectables
Keeping your skin in good shape, drinking lots of water, and using skincare products can be great, but sometimes, these efforts just aren’t enough to get that smooth, wrinkle-free look. Injectables are an excellent, non-surgical way to smooth out these pesky wrinkles or bring more youthful volume to your face. Simply put, injectables are chemical substances ‘injected’ in strategic areas of your face. These injectables can reduce the signs of wrinkles and even help contour parts of the body.
Injectables are split into two categories: neurotoxins/neuromodulators (aka wrinkle relaxers) and soft-tissue dermal fillers. Neuromodulators focus on reducing fine lines caused by facial movement, while dermal fillers look to increase volume in areas like the cheeks, lips, chin, and forehead.
Wrinkle Relaxers (Botox® or Dysport®)
Botox and its lesser-known counterpart, Dysport, are very popular FDA-approved cosmetic treatments. These injectable wrinkle relaxers effectively treat wrinkles and lines that result from facial expressions, including the lines between your eyebrows, the lines on your forehead, and the “crow’s feet” around your eyes.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are like a beauty boost in a syringe! They are a non-surgical cosmetic injectable that helps smooth out fine lines, enhance lips, define cheekbones, and add volume to certain areas of your face for a more youthful appearance.
Discover the Magic of Botox and Dysport
Botox and Dysport are leading, FDA-approved solutions for targeting wrinkles and expression lines, such as those that form between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and around the eyes. These quick and convenient cosmetic treatments, performed in our San Antonio clinics, typically take just a few minutes of your time. You’ll begin to see noticeable results within 3-5 days, with effects peaking around the two-week mark. By gently relaxing facial muscles, both treatments help you achieve a more youthful and vibrant appearance. The results last for three to four months, and you can easily schedule repeat treatments to maintain your radiant look. Embrace the confidence of a smoother, younger-looking complexion today!
You may choose to get Botox or Dysport to:
- Reduce the appearance of wrinkles
- Maintain a natural, youthful look
- Address certain medical conditions, such as
- Chronic migraines
- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- Muscle spasms or twitching
What is Botox?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a treatment made from a substance created by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Also known as Botulinum Type A, Botox can decrease or remove fine lines and wrinkles when used in careful amounts. It works by blocking signals from the nerves to the facial muscles. This means the muscles can’t move as easily, which smooths out the skin and lessens the appearance of wrinkles.
Botox was the first Botulinum Type A treatment approved by the FDA. It became available in 1989 and received approval for cosmetic use in 2002. Since then, it has become a popular option for injectables. When used by trained professionals, like our team of board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners trained in the art of aesthetics, Botox is safe and effective. Besides cosmetic uses, Botox can also help with other medical conditions like chronic migraines, excessive sweating, and muscle spasms.
What is Dysport?
Since Botox was first introduced, other companies have created similar injectable treatments for wrinkles. After Botox, Dysport® emerged as its counterpart in Europe and is now available in over 60 countries. In 2009, the FDA approved Dysport® for use in the United States, showing it is an effective, non-invasive option for reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Both Botox and Dysport had medical uses before they were approved for cosmetic use.
Dysport’s active ingredient is Botulinum Type A, just like Botox. When injected, Dysport targets the nerves around the injection site. This limits muscle movement, helping to relax the area and smooth the skin. Dysport is mainly used to treat moderate to severe forehead lines and glabellar lines, also known as frown lines or 11 lines.
Botox vs. Dysport: What's the Difference?
Fundamentally, there is no significant difference between Botox and Dysport. Both contain the same active ingredient (Botulinum Type A), and both can reduce the appearance of wrinkles. That said, the main difference is the level of concentration in each product. Dysport is more diluted than Botox. This means Dysport spreads faster, especially over a larger surface area, with just a few injections.
In summary:
- Botox works well for lip lines, Crow’s feet, and other fine wrinkles. Its high concentration and slow movement make it perfect for these small areas.
- Dysport works well for larger surface areas, like the forehead and 11 lines. It’s fast-acting and spreads quickly and evenly.
Am I a good candidate for Botox or Dysport?
Most doctors say that adults aged 35 to 65 are the best candidates for this treatment. Here are some factors to consider:
- You should have mild to severe facial wrinkles that did not improve with skin care recommended by a dermatologist.
- Your wrinkles should be in areas where Dysport or Botox can help, such as around the lips, cheeks, eyes, chin, and forehead.
- You should be in relatively good health without any preexisting skin conditions.
You should avoid this procedure if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have skin allergies, or are allergic to Botulinum Type A.
How does a Botox or Dysport procedure work?
The process is exactly the same for both Dysport and Botox. The procedure starts off with an initial consultation with one of our medical providers. The doctor or nurse practitioner will check your medical history, assess the wrinkles on the face, and come up with a game plan.
Botox and Dysport are non-surgical cosmetic procedures that take less than 30 minutes in most cases. It’s not uncommon for patients to get their procedure done on their lunch break. Compared to invasive procedures, injectables have shorter recovery times and a higher success rate. The only difference during the procedure is the injectable used.
Your doctor or nurse practitioner will mark off the intended injection sites and then use a topical agent to numb the skin. Next, the medical provider will then inject the Botox or Dysport in the appropriate spots. Dysport injections may, at times, be deeper than Botox injections. The deeper shot helps to cover the larger treatment areas. After checking your skin to make sure all goes well, you can leave and go about your day. Your medical provider will give you some simple guidelines to follow, such as:
- Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours.
- Do not massage your face or the area of the injection, as this can accidentally spread the neuromodulator to other parts of your face.
- Refrain from exercise or strenuous activity for at least 4 hours.
- Stay out of direct sun exposure for a minimum of 24 hours.
- Do not lie down for 3 hours after the procedure.
Over the next few days, you’ll start to see changes in your wrinkles and overall look!
What are the results of getting a Botox or Dysport injection?
Both injectables have a proven track record of effectively diminishing wrinkles, contributing to a more youthful and refreshed appearance. They reduce facial lines while preserving the natural look of the face.
When a patient receives a Dysport injection, they can expect to see noticeable results within a few days. The results typically last for up to four months, allowing patients to enjoy a smoother complexion without the need for surgery.
For Botox injections, patients can anticipate similar benefits, with results lasting anywhere from four to six months, depending on the injection site. In areas like the eyes and lips, Botox often provides longer-lasting effects. As the treatment gradually wears off, patients will begin to notice more movement in their muscles, but the appearance of their wrinkles will still remain diminished. This timeframe also serves as a good reminder for scheduling the next appointment to maintain results.
Are there any side effects to be aware of?
Since both treatments contain Botulinum Type A, they can have similar side effects. Common reactions might include a little pain or swelling at the injection site, headaches, droopy eyelids, or dryness, especially if the injection is close to the eyes. In rare cases, you could experience more serious effects like muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or breathing issues. That said, side effects are quite rare, especially if a licensed medical professional performs the procedure. It’s also important to keep in mind that any medical or cosmetic procedure comes with some level of risk!
Can I combine Botox and Dysport with other treatments?
It’s not uncommon for patients to ask about other treatments along with Botox or Dysport. For instance, you can get an injectable dermal filler, plumping up your skin and adding much-needed volume. These fillers, like Juvederm or Restylane, contain hyaluronic acid, a natural compound found in the skin. When used alongside Botox or Dysport, a patient can get a “liquid facelift”. Liquid facelifts are becoming a widely popular option since you can avoid major surgery altogether. Learn more about our other facial rejuvenation services in the section below!

Aging is a completely natural process that happens to everyone, but that does not mean you must settle for sagging skin, wrinkles, or a loss of firmness. With dermal fillers, you can restore some of this lost volume that comes naturally with aging. At Vital Life Wellness in San Antonio, TX, Patricia Escareno, RN, can provide you with personalized anti-aging options that restore youthful fullness and firmness to your face or hands.
You may choose to get dermal fillers to:
- Make your facial features more symmetrical
- Plump up your lips and cheeks
- Smooth wrinkles and creases in your face
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are non-surgical treatments that enhance your facial appearance and help reduce signs of aging. We inject natural substances under the skin to restore volume, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and improve facial shape. Our options include hyaluronic acid fillers and collagen-stimulating fillers, each designed to meet your specific needs.
Compared to plastic surgery, dermal fillers offer a quick and easy way to improve your look, with fewer risks and quicker recovery time. Fillers can also be used alongside other treatments, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®.
Depending on where you get the injection, dermal fillers can help you achieve the following:
- Get fuller, more balanced lips.
- Enhance your cheekbones.
- Minimize the nasolabial fold, aka “smile lines” and “laugh lines.”
- Soften the lines that run from the corners of your mouth to your chin, sometimes called the “marionette lines.”
- Restore lost volume in areas of your face.
- Smooth out wrinkles and crepey skin on your hands for a youthful look.
Types of Dermal Fillers Offered
Juvederm
Juvéderm® Injectable Gel is the “next generation” of FDA-approved dermal fillers. Created by Allergan, the manufacturer of BOTOX® Cosmetic, Juvéderm provides a smooth, long-lasting correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Juvéderm is offered at both of our San Antonio clinic locations.
How does Juvéderm work?
Juvéderm dermal fillers contain non-animal cross-linked hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains water, so when this gel-like filler gets injected into the skin, it creates a plump, full look. It is the only hyaluronic acid filler proven safe and effective for patients with dark skin.
What areas can be treated with Juvéderm?
As a person ages, the lines that form around the nose, mouth, and chin can become more pronounced and noticeable. Juvéderm is most commonly used to treat these facial lines, including nasolabial folds, vertical lip lines, and marionette lines (creases on either side of the mouth to the chin).
How long does Juvéderm last?
Depending on individual factors such as skin type, lifestyle, and the specific areas treated, Juvéderm can last up to one year!
Radiesse
Radiesse® is a safe, FDA-approved filler that helps give your face a rested, youthful appearance. Radiesse works by rebuilding your skin from the inside out. This filler can be used to treat larger areas of the face in just one session, making it a convenient option for those looking to reduce signs of aging. Radiesse is offered at both of our San Antonio clinic locations.
How does Radiesse work?
Radiesse works with your body below the skin’s surface to fill out areas that have lost volume and firmness. It is an injectable filler made of tiny microspheres of a synthetic material called calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA). The calcium substance creates a scaffold for your tissue to build around, which is the added lift necessary to create volume and firmness in the skin.
What areas can be treated with Radiesse?
Radiesse is effective for facial contouring, smoothing smile lines, augmenting cheeks, chin, jawline, and even non-surgical rhinoplasty. It can also reduce signs of aging on the hands, which tend to show aging more quickly than other body areas.
How long does Radiesse last?
The duration of Radiesse results can vary based on individual factors such as skin type, lifestyle, and the specific areas being treated. A single treatment can last up to one year.
Restylane
Restylane® is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler. It is designed to enhance lip volume and minimize the appearance of fine lines above the mouth with a natural look and feel. It has also been shown to improve texture and lip color, allowing patients to maintain their natural-looking expressions. Restylane is a great treatment option for people with lips that have thinned due to aging or those seeking natural-looking, softer, fuller lips.
How does Restylane work?
Restylane, like Juvéderm, utilizes hyaluronic acid to enhance the treated area. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in moisture, leading to an increase in volume wherever it is injected under the skin.
What areas can be treated with Restylane?
Restylane is most effective for lip augmentation and for wrinkles around your mouth. However, there are many types of Restylane dermal filler, so always ask your medical provider which is best for your needs.
How long does Restylane last?
The results of Restylane can vary, but a single treatment can last up to one year.
Note: This image was taken directly from the Restylane’s website. Individual results will vary.
